St. Boniface Hospital is home to Cardiac Sciences and thousands of hearts have continued to beat thanks to the expert care of its surgeons, physicians, nurses, and auxiliary staff.
The relationship between our hearts and lungs is intimate, and so local composer and musician, Ashley Au, was given special access to Cardiac Sciences to create a site specific piece of choral music. Figure of Eight brings together the many experiences involved in heart patients’ struggles and recovery, and the work of those who care for them, as well as the many loved ones who support all of these people. With Au’s composition and each breath of the choir, this labour and care are re-embodied and transformed into music. It is a profound expression of our shared humanity.
This project was made possible by the generous support of the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, St. Boniface Hospital, and Cardiac Sciences.
Heliophile | Anna Binta Diallo
April 1 – July 2025
Few architects in the province have captured the hearts and minds of its people as profoundly as Etienne Gaboury, whose creations are rooted in the nuances of regional character, shaping the way Manitobans perceive themselves and their landscape—he even designed the Hospital’s Atrium. Gaboury is also the grandfather of the artist Anna Binta Diallo (a professor at the University of Manitoba) and was a profound source of inspiration to her, guiding, encouraging, and influencing her journey as a visual artist since she was very young. Gaboury passed away in St. Boniface Hospital in 2021, surrounded by his family.
Heliophile (meaning lover of light) is an exhibition in which Diallo explores the influence of her grandfather on her own art work. It will include sculptures embodying the love of light and space that characterise both of their work. A luminous and ethereal atmosphere will be created in the gallery that will inspire contemplation and engage viewers with narratives of interconnectedness.
This is a very special and important exhibition, not only in terms of centring one of Canada’s most acclaimed architects and also a rising star in the country’s art world; but also in terms of St. B.’s relationship to Gaboury and thereby Diallo, and their influence in the city.
