Unseen St. B. presents a communal portrait of St. Boniface Hospital by some of the many people who work and volunteer here. St. B.’s healing and support services depend upon each its workers as well as many different spaces. Yet, much of this complex and busy institution’s operations occur out of sight of the public and even of many its staff since the campus is so large. Galerie Buhler Gallery wanted to celebrate this unseen side.

For this exhibition, GBG invited the hospital’s staff, physicians, and volunteers to take a single cellphone photo of something they wanted to share from their workday. You will see images of things they found funny or weird, pretty or ugly, frustrating or hopeful. Each one is unique, each one is important. The act of participation and sharing is as essential to this project as the images themselves and every photo submitted that adhered to the confidentiality provisos was included.

Unseen St. B. reflects the deep importance of inclusivity and imagination. Portraits are multifaceted things, at once revelatory and mysterious. One of the most powerful aspects of our portrait is the clarity with which it demonstrates how a whole is inseparable from its many wonderful parts—a perfect sentiment with which to celebrate Galeri Buhler Gallery’s fifteenth anniversary.
