St. Boniface Hospital is home to Cardiac Sciences and thousands of hearts have continued to beat thanks to the expert care of its surgeons, physicians, nurses, and auxiliary staff.
The relationship between our hearts and lungs is intimate, and so local composer and musician, Ashley Au, was given special access to Cardiac Sciences to create a site specific piece of choral music. Figure of Eight brings together the many experiences involved in heart patients’ struggles and recovery, and the work of those who care for them, as well as the many loved ones who support all of these people. With Au’s composition and each breath of the choir, this labour and care are re-embodied and transformed into music. It is a profound expression of our shared humanity.
